Description
Egg prices hit an all-time high last month. The Consumer Price Index says the average cost for a dozen eggs was $6.23 in March. That's despite the predictions President Donald Trump has made in recent weeks and industry expectations.
Experts blame high prices on the ongoing bird flu outbreak. More than 168 million birds have been killed since 2022 to help limit the spread of the virus.
Wholesale egg prices started to drop in the middle of March as new outbreaks in flocks declined, but prices on grocery shelves remain high–partly due to increased Easter demand.
The soaring egg prices have raised questions about price gouging. Earlier this week, Cal-Maine Foods, which is the nation's largest egg producer, said its quarterly profit more than tripled. The Department of Justice is investigating.
Experts expect customers may finally see relief after Easter when demand slows down, and supply continues to improve as farmers get more chickens back into production.
