Description
It was a normal day on the job for Josh Keating of Monroe County when a chunk of ice hit his windshield while driving.
The whole incident was caught on his dashcam.
"I was locked in on the road. I saw it for a split second, and then it hit. I heard a huge bang, and that was that," said Keating.
Keating says he was traveling eastbound on Route 78 to Allentown on his way to a client when a chunk of ice came loose from the top of a tractor-trailer.
Immediately after the ice crashed through his windshield, he was able to pull over safely.
"I had an angel with me. The only thing I got was cuts and bruises basically on my hands because when it came through, I put my hand up to kind of catch the glass," explained Keating.
State police say these incidents happen far too often after a snowfall. Trooper Anthony Petroski reminds drivers of their responsibility under state law to clear off snow.
"A driver has 24 hours after the snow stops to clean the vehicle in its entirety. That includes the hood trunk and the roof of the vehicle," said Trooper Petroski.
State Police say drivers can get pulled over and fined for ice not cleared from vehicles.
Officials say if someone is injured or killed because of ice coming loose, fines can range from $200 to $1,500.
"The operator can veer off of the road, and now we have serious injuries, so you may think it's not a big deal, but it could be a big deal, and we don't want it to get to this level. So it is important that you take some time to clean your vehicle off to ensure other's safety on the road," said Trooper Petroski.
