They weren't soaring out of giant barrels like their human counterparts at the Paris Olympics surfing competition in Tahiti. But dozens of dog surfers shred some waves in Northern California at the World Dog Surfing Championship on August 3, 2024. The event first took place with a few local dogs back in 2006. In 2024, hundreds of spectators showed up to watch dozens of canines from as far away as Europe and Asia hang ten. Awards were given out in several categories depending on the dog's size. Judges were looking for the distance of the ride as well as giving bonus points for style. Proceeds from the annual event support local animal rescue groups.
