Description
In the Capurro neighborhood, in western Montevideo, the remains of a young African who died centuries ago, captive and far from his native Africa, were recently identified, a milestone that makes Uruguay's slave-owning past visible and reignites demands for reparations from the Afro population. Monica dos Santos felt more than ever the suffering of her ancestors when she saw the half-buried skeleton, almost in a fetal position: "Especially the Afro people, we feel a lot of pain but also the hope of a reparation, a reparation that is not only symbolic".
