The Houston Independent School District will begin linking teacher compensation to classroom effectiveness starting in the 2026–2027 school year, district leaders announced Tuesday afternoon in a livestreamed update. Under the new pay-for-performance model, teacher salaries will be based on individual effectiveness rather than seniority. The district’s Teacher Excellence System (TES), already in use, will serve as the foundation for evaluations. Miles said more than 10,500 evaluations have already been conducted using TES, which assesses instruction, outcomes, planning, and professionalism.
