Description
A jury on Thursday found a man guilty of intoxication manslaughter in the death of Harris County Deputy Constable Jennifer Chavis nearly three years to the day after she was killed.
Adolfo Serrano was convicted of causing the crash that killed Chavis when he slammed into the back of her patrol unit along Beltway 8 near Fondren on April 2, 2022. Investigators said the impact caused her vehicle to burst into flames.
The trial began Monday with opening statements. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare led the prosecution, marking the first time in decades that a sitting district attorney served as lead prosecutor in a trial. At the time of the crash, Teare was head of the DA’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
