Description
Second lady Usha Vance is set to travel to Greenland this week as President Donald Trump continues to suggest the U.S. could take control of the mineral-rich Arctic island.
Her office says Vance will leave Thursday and return Saturday.
The wife of Vice President JD Vance will be part of a U.S. delegation set to “visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.”
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz will also be on the trip.
Associated Press reporter Chris Megerian says the trip is causing agitation for Greenland.
“A lot of people see this as furthering the Trump administration's goals of acquiring Greenland. Something Greenland has said it does not want to have happen. Mrs. Vance says she's going to be there for a cultural event, a dog sled race. But this is definitely a politically charged environment if she's going to be stepping into,” Megerian said.
Greenland is a self-governing region of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States.
But Trump has said repeatedly that he thinks the U.S. should take Greenland for strategic and national security purposes.
