Description
President Donald Trump said Russian leader Vladimir Putin would accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine as part of a potential deal to end Russia's war there.
Trump made the comments to reporters during a meeting at the White House on Monday with French President Emmanuel Macron on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
“Yeah, he will accept it," Trump said. “I have asked him that question. Look, if we do this deal, he’s not looking for World War.”
---------
Reporter asking question: "Would you support the idea to send European troops in Ukraine to back the ceasefire?"
Donald Trump, U.S. President: "European troops may go into Ukraine as peacemakers. So when the agreement is done, they can watch that everything is followed properly. I don't think that's going to be a problem. And a lot of the European countries, I think, I don't want to speak for France, but I know that the president's talked about doing that also. I think that'll be a very good day when we can go in as peacekeepers as opposed to what's going on right now with everybody being killed."
Reporter asking question: "Will they have U.S. backing?"
Trump: "Well, we're going to have a backing of some kind. And obviously the European countries are going to be involved."
Reporter: "Will Putin accept European troops as peacekeepers?"
Trump: "Yeah, he will accept that. I've asked him that question. I've asked him that question. Because he said that. Look, if we do this deal, he's not looking for more war. He doesn't mind. But I've specifically asked him that question. He has no problem with it."
Later in the news conference:
Reporter: "Are you thinking of going to Moscow soon? Maybe in May for the 9th of May?"
Trump: "Not soon, but I would be, certainly, if if this all get settled out, which I think it will. Sure. I would go there. And he'd (Putin) come here too. (Reporter: 9th of May, in Red Square?) I don't know, the 9th of May. No I don't I think that's pretty. That's pretty soon. But no, at the appropriate time I would go to Moscow. (Reporter question) I think the war could end soon. Within weeks. Yeah, I think so."
