Jan. 21 on The Story: Today marked the beginning of a new legislative session in Salem, with lawmakers kicking off the work they'll be doing for the next 160 days. It was a day largely without fanfare and with little sign of brewing conflict between the Democrats, a supermajority in both chambers, and the minority Republicans. Instead, legislators quickly got the ball rolling on several batches of bills before splitting up into the committees where they'll do the lion's share of their work. Leaders from both parties had similar things to say: that Oregonians expect their tax dollars to deliver results for the state, which will require working together.
