Description
Uber driver Geoffrey Hammond has been found guilty of assault with a firearm and unlawful use of a firearm stemming from a deadly road rage incident in downtown Portland, but the jury deadlocked on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Hammond, 48, was charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault with a firearm and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon for fatally shooting another driver during an argument and then shooting and injuring a bystander who had begun to film the incident. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and claimed he was acting in self-defense.
The trial began Dec. 4 and moved to jury deliberation last week, with deliberations stretching nearly three full days. The judge declared a mistrial for the murder and attempted murder counts Monday afternoon, while accepting the jury's unanimous verdicts on the other three counts.
