Dec. 16 on The Story: Just last year, a new Washington state law went into effect aimed at making it easier for families involved with Child Protective Services to keep custody of their children. The state lawmaker who championed the bill said that splitting up families was causing "irrevocable damage." But as our Seattle sister station KING explores, a number of child welfare advocates argue that the bill is causing even more harm, allowing parents in the grips of severe substance abuse to keep their children — even when babies are born addicted to fentanyl.
