Description
Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity, and with coal plants shutting down, the supply and demand of energy gets dicey.
Editor's note: After this story aired, the Northwest Power Planning Council contacted us to clarify that they do not assess the risk of rolling blackouts under the scenarios mentioned in our story. They only assess the "shortfall risk." The shortfall risk refers to a risk that there is not enough electricity to meet demand. However, the Power Planning Council points out that utilities may have several steps they could take to avoid a blackout in that situation.
