Description
Nov. 13 on The Story: With the arrival of November rains, Oregon's historic 2024 fire season has officially come to an end. Fires this year burned more acres and cost the state more money than ever before, burning through large swaths of eastern Oregon and in stubborn, rugged reaches of the forested Cascades. But before the season got underway, we joined dozens of young men and women learning the ropes of wildland firefighting. For some it was their first time preparing to get out on the fire line; for others, it was just a refresher after several eventful seasons. They were just a few of the 12,000 or so men and women who fought Oregon's wildfires over a season that we have to hope remains an outlier.
