Nov. 4 on The Story: Every four years, we're reminded of the United States' rather arcane way of electing the president. It isn't simply about winning voters over to claim a popular victory — if that were the case, we might see a presidential nominee from either party campaign in the Pacific Northwest for a change. Nope, it's all about a few "swing states." And we have the Electoral College to thank for that. While they are based partly on population, the electoral votes that each state gets are largely awarded in a winner-take-all fashion, which changes how the candidates campaign.
