Description
Sept. 3 on The Story: When we last met Dr. Rebecca Kennedy, she was working at Kaiser in Portland and helping patients suffering from long COVID; the mysterious set of lingering symptoms some share of patients have dealt with for months or years after getting sick. Since then, she's opened up a clinic of her own, and she's applying some little-known treatments to a wider world of debilitating chronic ailments. According to Kennedy and other clinicians like her, many of these "neuroplastic" conditions are caused by part of the brain misfiring, misinterpreting signals from the body as signs of danger and reacting by causing symptoms such as pain. For patients of these conditions, the pain and discomfort is very real, but there's no physical cause beyond the brain itself. Now, some therapies are able to address the problem in novel ways.
