Description
Aug. 28 on The Story: In the ocean off Driftwood Beach near Newport, an Oregon State University-backed group called PacWave is putting the finishing touches on a project meant to kickstart an as-yet underutilized form of renewable energy. They've been creating a test site for wave energy — using ocean waves to generate electricity — that is both utility-scale and connected to the shoreside electrical grid. It's been in the works since at least 2012, and may be another year yet before it's really living up to its full potential. But the PacWave site will eventually allow four different wave energy devices to set up simultaneously so that they can be tested for efficacy. It may not be the ultimate wave of the future, but researchers are hopeful it will create ripples in the overall ecosystem of renewable power.
