Description
Enhancements to a U.S. Forest Service database is giving researchers and fire managers a more fine-tuned look at where and when wildfires could ignite. The latest update adds nearly 270 additional attributes in four categories: weather and climate, vegetation and topography, social and economic factors, and jurisdiction and infrastructure, the latter including preparedness levels and distance to roads. The team that improved the database is from Oregon State University and Boise State University; they say it's all about probabilities, but probabilities can be helpful for predicting wildfire activity. The improved database will also help communities across the country better prepare for and respond to wildfires and bounce back from them after they've been put out.
