Description
Some top federal lawmakers from Oregon got a briefing today on the 2024 wildfire season; what to expect and what's needed to both prevent and fight wildfires.
U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley were joined by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, at the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in Portland. The Democratic delegation got updates from state and federal experts on weather conditions, resources, and the use of new technology, among other things.
While there is some good news in terms of a lack of drought now, and a switch to a La Nina weather pattern that could bring more moisture form the Pacific Ocean, Oregon will not be immune from fire.
Adding to concerns is a 20-percent shortage in wildland firefighters right now. Senator Wyden says teamwork will be key.
Another topic discussed on Monday was the lack of housing for firefighters, something the congressional delegation said they'd take back to Washington D.C. to try to fix.
