June 20 on The Story: You're likely familiar by now with the Oregon Employment Department's struggles in getting benefits out to people, resulting in a backlog of claims and many people unable to get help through the agency's jammed phone lines. But new federal data shows just how bad the problem has gotten — and how recently. Most unemployed Oregonians are waiting at least three weeks to get their first benefits from the state. As a result, Oregon is the third-worst in the nation for getting timely payments out to people. And even though many of these problems date back a year, the data shows that things got measurably worse after OED launched its new Frances Online computer system.
