Description
June 5 on The Story: This week, members of a bipartisan transportation committee in the Oregon Legislature held a public hearing in Portland, inviting voters and taxpayers to air their concerns about the state's highway system. But before the public got to weigh in, the Oregon Department of Transportation's director delivered a presentation all about the agency's declining revenues for road maintenance and other key programs. Essentially, gas taxes aren't cutting it anymore, and the agency is saying that the difference needs to be made up somehow. They'll be making this presentation at each of the 12 statewide hearings scheduled in the days and months to come — no doubt laying the groundwork for when lawmakers inevitably take on transportation funding during next year's legislative session.
