Description
May 23 on The Story: In the Pacific Northwest art culture, Henk Pander is a painter who garners a great deal of respect. He passed away last year, so it made sense when a Portland nonprofit was contacted online by one of his sons, who expressed appreciation for the group's support of Pender's work. But when the younger Pender suggested selling some of his late father's paintings to the organization in order to donate the proceeds to charity, alarm bells started going off. Luckily, the nonprofit figured out that it was an imposter trying to scam them for money. But as they continued to play along, the depths that the scammers went to only became stranger, up to and including the use of AI to create deepfake videos.
