Description
May 20 on The Story: During this past El Niño winter, parts of Oregon were wetter than predicted during a typically dry weather pattern. But many areas of the Pacific Northwest were not so lucky, setting up the potential for an active wildfire season — and at best, a very smoky summer in Oregon. In Washington and Idaho, the northern mountains saw below-average snowpack. As a result, large parts of both states are either abnormally dry or in drought conditions heading into the summer. And even in Oregon, where the winter was wetter, it may have been just enough to spur the growth of underbrush that will dry out in the summer, making fine fuels for potential fires. This week, our Environment Northwest team is diving into the conditions that the Pacific Northwest could face during wildfire season.
