May 13 on The Story: If you're familiar with The Story's prior entries in the "Tainted Waters" series, then you'll know that for 30 years, the state has been aware of harmful pollutants found in residential wells throughout the Lower Umatilla Basin. Chemical nitrates enter the soil through a variety of food production industries in the region, but the lion's share come from farming. Theoretically, the Oregon Department of Agriculture is supposed to regulate pollution that farms introduce in surface and groundwater, so why haven't they taken a more direct role in solving the problem? Pat Dooris recently got a chance to sit down with the agency's director and ask her for an answer.
