Description
April 12 on The Story: Portland has famously great drinking water — so great, in fact, that the city was able to slide for many years without filtering or otherwise treating the water in the same way that most other cities do. But that changed in 2017, when the presence of the parasite cryptosporidium prompted health officials to step in. The city has a 2027 deadline for building a water filtration plant, but construction has repeatedly faced delays, pushing the price tag ever higher. In 2017, it was $500 million. Under a plan approved by the city this week, it's now closer to $2.13 billion.
