Description
April 10 on The Story: Every year, state and federal forestry staff use controlled burns across Oregon as a tool to protect lives and property from the inevitable wildfires that will come during the summer. So, what happens if those prescribed fires get out of control? While it doesn't happen often, it does happen. But something unprecedented occurred when a U.S. Forest Service burn escaped in October 2022, scorching 20 acres of private land. The Grant County Sheriff's Office came out and arrested the USFS "burn boss" who led the operation, charging him with reckless burning. The case is still plodding its way through court, and in the meantime, wildland firefighters have become uneasy. If escaped burns happen, and criminal charges are the result, who's going to want that responsibility?
