Description
March 22 on The Story: Since last year, The Story has reported on a federal lawsuit filed by a single mother of five biological children living in Malheur County. Jessica Bates sued the state of Oregon after she was turned down as a foster parent because she objected to the state's requirements around LGBTQ+ kids. Bates said that those rules — that she support things like gender-affirming medical care if that was something the child needed — went against her Christian faith. But for other Oregon families, like the Thoms in Beaverton, their Christian faith isn't a barrier to their status as a foster family.
