Description
March 14 on The Story: Over the last few years, school board meetings across the U.S. have become a venue for some particularly heated rhetoric. While the average meeting is still pretty boring (if important), public comment periods can occasionally become open mic nights for culture war issues. There are certainly cases where speech in those examples can go too far. But who decides where the line is? A federal lawsuit filed by a mom in the Gladstone School District concerns precisely that. She says district officials didn't like her criticisms, so they required that her comments get pre-approved before she could speak. They ultimately banned her from attending board meetings. According to her lawsuit, this is a case of "prior restraint" — one where the district violated her First Amendment rights.
