Description
Feb. 23 on The Story: Since before the legislative session even started this year, Republican and Democratic lawmakers had different ideas of how to overhaul Oregon's drug policies — even if they were in agreement that drug possession should be recriminalized to some extent, rolling back a major feature of Measure 110. But this week, there were signs that the two parties may be nearing a compromise. While the bill under consideration is the one championed by Democrats, they've reportedly agreed to longer jail sentences for drug possession and walked back their idea for "deflection programs," giving Republicans more of the punitive weight they wanted for people caught in possession who don't complete drug treatment. But many of the details are still unknown.
