Description
Feb. 22 on The Story: The Portland Metro Chamber recently released its annual State of the Economy report, and the results are a mixed bag. While the job market is now considered essentially "recovered" after the COVID-19 pandemic, local counties continue to see a net loss in population each year — with the exception of Clark County — which the Chamber attributes to the migration to remote work, an unaffordable housing market and high tax burden. Housing development and office vacancy aren't looking too great either. Some of those things can be improved through policy, but others aren't going to change anytime soon. So, business leaders think that it's time to stop looking for a return to pre-pandemic life and instead envision a new way forward for the city.
