Feb. 8 on The Story: At a palatial home in Portland's Kerns neighborhood, J. Michael Shoemaker operated a yoga and meditation practice called The Movement Center. Under the name Swami Chetanananda, or "Swamiji," Shoemaker was a spiritual guru with a devoted following dating back to at least the 1970s. And for years, according to a federal lawsuit and multiple women who spoke with KGW, Shoemaker groomed and sexually abused women under his tutelage. Yet the Oregon guru has never faced criminal charges, and former members say that he's continued his practice after leaving Portland.
