Description
Feb. 1 on The Story: In November, The Story dedicated five nights to the decades-old problem of groundwater contamination in eastern Oregon. Wells throughout the Lower Umatilla Basin contain high levels of nitrates, chemicals largely deposited as a byproduct of agricultural industries that can cause serious health problems in high enough quantities. Despite knowing about the issue for a very long time, the state of Oregon hasn't done anything to curb the pollution — in fact it's only gotten worse. State regulators have been hard to reach for an interview on the subject. But recently, the federal EPA administrator for this region agreed to sit down for a conversation on the topic.
