Jan. 17 on The Story: In 2020, Multnomah County voters elected Mike Schmidt by a landslide. The next few years were a rollercoaster ride, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice protests, worsening homelessness, a spike in homicides and a very visible drug crisis on the streets of Portland. Through it all, Schmidt has gotten a great deal of blame for the state of crime in the county. Now, as he seeks re-election in November, Schmidt faces a challenge from a veteran prosecutor in his own office. The Story's Pat Dooris sat down with Schmidt to talk about the criticisms and what he has to offer voters in a second term.
