Jan. 12 on The Story: A car outside the home of Portland Commissioner Rene Gonzalez went up in flames Friday morning. No one was hurt, but the commissioner said that the car belonged to a family member, and investigators have said that they suspect it was arson. Talking with KGW on Friday, Gonzalez expressed little doubt that the fire was targeted at him for his political stances. The commissioner has staked out a comparatively hard-line position on homelessness and has garnered support from police and firefighter unions — he stated Friday that the city has been too lenient on "extremists."
