Description
Jan. 8 on The Story: We've reported previously on Jessica Bates, a single mother of five living in eastern Oregon who sued the state over its foster care policies, arguing that they violated her First Amendment rights. Bates, a Christian, refused to comply with rules that require foster parents to support kids with LGBTQ+ identities. Oregon is one of 35 states with similar rules, and a handful of other states protect foster kids' sexual orientation. But the Biden administration has proposed a new rule that would create baseline protections nationwide — and Republican attorneys general in a number of states are pushing back. We took a closer look at the arguments being made for and against the proposed federal policy.
