Description
Jan. 5 on The Story: After a group of Oregon lawmakers spent the beginning of last year moving heaven and earth to bring funds from the $280 billion federal CHIPS and Science Act to the state, it looks like those efforts are truly starting to pay off. If you can't recall what the CHIPS Act was all about, the idea is to promote domestic manufacturing of high-tech semiconductors so that the U.S. isn't so reliant on importing them from other countries. This week, the Biden administration announced a $72 million grant for expansion at Microchip Technology's facility in Gresham, which is joined by $11 million from the state. For local leaders, this is a big victory for job growth and economic power, something that will be paying off for years to come.
