Description
Dec. 14 on The Story: As we try to determine whether the Endangered Species Act has succeeded in accomplishing what it was created to do, conflicting viewpoints quickly emerge. Some say that it's working as intended, others that it has gone too far, and still others believe that it hasn't gone far enough. According to one former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official, two fundamental American philosophies collide in the ESA — the desire to preserve and share in this beautiful, bountiful land; and the high premium placed on private enterprise and property rights. So, has the Endangered Species Act been a success? Like most complicated questions, it depends on who you ask.
