Description
Nov. 10 on The Story: You may have heard already that law school graduates will no longer have to pass the bar exam to become practicing attorneys in Oregon. Perhaps you heard it in a similar context to the state's decision to eliminate some high school graduation requirements. In both cases, there's a lot more to the story, but we've only got time for the one tonight — the bar exam. Starting next May, there will be an alternative path for people to become attorneys in Oregon, but it's not easy. Instead of a multi-day test, the new method will require over 600 hours of hands-on work and a hefty portfolio to prove it, one that the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners will evaluate. Champions of the program say it's not an example of lowering the bar, far from it — they say it's the way of the future.
