Nov. 6 on The Story: Last month, the Oregon Department of Transportation started a messaging blitz, warning that Oregonians should expect less maintenance on roadways heading into the winter months, when things like plowing and de-icing become vital to both timely travel and public safety. The reason? The agency said that Oregon's fuel tax revenues are declining while inflation remains a major driver of additional costs. But The Story looked into those claims and found that the first one, at least, is not entirely true. Fuel tax revenues are still going up, even if they aren't climbing at the rates they once did.
