Description
Nov. 2 on The Story: The current members of Portland City Council, after much jostling, just approved the structure of the city's government come 2025. If you recall, Portland voters last year approved some big changes to the city charter, including an expansion of the council to 12 seats, three from each of four newly created districts. Not long ago, the city wrapped up the process for mapping those four districts. But yesterday, the council cemented what administration of city departments will actually look like, which is arguably a bigger deal. That's because city councilors will no longer be calling the shots on Portland bureaus, instead those will be headed by a city administrator with multiple deputies — and because the new model is expected to cost over $23 million each year, compared to a current $10 million. Tonight we dive into that structure and the heated discussion that brought it over the finish line.
