Description
More than 200 fifth graders from Ridgefield’s Sunset Ridge Intermediate spent the week at the Cispus Learning Center in Randle, Wash. for a week of outdoor school.
The school district has carried on the tradition for over 50 years. Students learn about soil & water, plants & animals, orienteering and survival skills. Ridgefield’s outdoor school coordinator Tammy Cresap says kids who may not thrive in a traditional academic setting really shine when exposed to this unique style of learning. Not only do the kids spend a week away, but they also get to enjoy camp life by sleeping in the on-campus cabins, having campfires, and putting on skits and songs. Many of the counselors are high schoolers who went through the program themselves and are back to volunteer.
