Description
Oct. 11 on The Story: Tesla cars have a reputation as the height of electric vehicle technology in the U.S., but that level of new tech can come at a cost. Many drivers have reported driving at highway speeds when their Tesla suddenly and automatically slams on the brakes without any driver input. The phenomenon, known as "phantom braking," has been documented in videos shared online by Tesla owners, an apparent response to imagined roadway hazards — sometimes with deadly consequences. Over the past two months, KGW has analyzed thousands of federal auto safety complaints, interviewed more than 50 Tesla owners and even tested a vehicle over a 750-mile road trip. Our investigation found incidents of unexpected or "phantom" braking are more widespread than previously reported.
