Oct. 4 on The Story: Fentanyl overdoses are becoming increasingly common even among school-aged children, and schools in Oregon and Washington have turned to the opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan as a means of trying to save lives. In Washington, state lawmakers passed a bill in 2019 requiring that most high schools have the medication on hand. The increased availability has been a literal lifesaver in some cases, but the data shows that it's being used more and more — underlining just how bad things have gotten. And that concern means that other schools, even the ones not required to keep Narcan around, are stocking doses just in case.
