Description
Oct. 2 on The Story: The city of Portland has yet to begin enforcement of the new camping ordinance that took effect at the beginning of July, but already it's the subject of a class action lawsuit. The suit, filed by attorneys from the Oregon Law Center on behalf of a group of homeless people, alleges that the camping ban violates Oregon law and the state constitution because it imposes "unreasonable" punishments on unsheltered people, many of whom will not be able to avoid sleeping or attempting to stay dry during daytime hours. The lawsuit is similar to the earlier case Johnson v. Grants Pass, one also brought by the Oregon Law Center, that reiterated certain protections for unsheltered homeless people under the U.S. Constitution.
