Description
Sept. 27 on The Story: Right at the beginning of 2020, Portland's only sobering station shut down. For about 30 years, it was the place where first responders could take highly intoxicated people to stay for a few hours and sober up. But it wasn't equipped to handle the rapidly-changing landscape of drugs and mental health crises, and the glorified "drunk tank" was being asked to function like a psych ward. In the years since, a group has been working to figure out what to do in its stead. But what they came up with isn't another sobering center, and that has some Multnomah County commissioners clamoring for a return to the original concept.
