Sept. 6 on The Story: It's been a long time in the making. The Oregon Board of Forestry is closing in on a 70-year plan for managing state forest lands, an effort to untangle the knot formed by decades of lawsuits related to timber harvests and the destruction of habitat favored by several endangered species. Under the plan, parts of state forest lands will be set aside for habitat conservation while others become fair game for logging. But as it comes down to the wire, the compromise is becoming a bitter pill for seemingly all parties involved to swallow.
