Description
Sept. 5 on The Story: It sounds macabre, but proponents say it's all about respecting traditions. A new Oregon law allows for medical facilities to return amputated body parts to patients under certain circumstances. The bill originated with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and the St. Charles Health System in Bend, who argued that some tribal communities believe that a person's body must be together for a smooth transition into the spirit world. Despite those traditions, the practice has been difficult if not impossible to observe — until now.
