Aug. 16 on The Story: Early this month, a couple from Portland landed in Hawaii in order to celebrate two big milestones — their 29th anniversary and a retirement. They spent some eight days in the paradise of Maui, ending up in Lahaina on August 8. They had no idea what was coming their way within hours of their arrival. That afternoon, strong winds sent flames racing toward the town. A hurried evacuation became a humanitarian disaster. And as we're still discovering, dozens of people — at least 110 — died as the flames overtook Lahaina.
