July 24, 2023 on The Story: At the beginning of June, the Portland Police Bureau put out a statement in response to speculation about a series of grisly discoveries in the greater Portland area — six bodies, all women, found between February and early May. At the time, PPB said there was "no reason to believe" the cases were connected. We now know that they spoke too soon. Investigators believe at least four of the deaths are connected to a single person of interest, identified by Willamette Week as ex-convict Jesse Calhoun. So who is Calhoun and how did we get here?
