July 20, 2023 on The Story: Next year marks 30 years since Oregon legalized assisted dying through the Death with Dignity Act — becoming the first state in the nation to do so. When the right conditions are met, it allows people to end their life with a mix of medications. But just this year, lawmakers made a change to the venerable law. It all revolves around a lawsuit filed in 2021 that disputed the law's residency requirement, which made it illegal for someone from out of state to obtain end-of-life care in Oregon. Tonight, we take a look back at how the law came to be and the way it works now.
