July 10, 2023 on The Story: For years now, Oregon's primary psychiatric hospital has suffered from overcrowding, worsened by a growing number of mentally ill criminal defendants who have been found unfit to stand trial. The capacity issue has become central to a long series of court rulings concerning the amount of time that these defendants must wait in jail before room opens up at the state hospital. But the most recent court decision favors a coalition of county district attorneys — prioritizing defendants accused of more serious crimes for longer stays at the facility. While it is a change, it isn't a fix.
